About This Item

Ulm, [Konrad Dinckmut, about 1478]. *** Editio princeps. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - *** Editio princeps. Copy bound by the printer Konrad Dinckmut. Little is known about Konrad Dinckmut's life. He is listed in the tax books of the city of Ulm in 1476 as a book printer, and perhaps first worked as a bookbinder and assistant to other printers such as Johann Zainer and then from 1477 apparently in his own workshop. In addition to his active printing shop, Dinckmut operated a prolific bindery. He had no commercial success and had to sell his house in 1488. His last print probably appeared in the fall of 1496. This binding comes from the work shop of Dinckmut or of Dinckmut and Konrad Mancz, an other printer. The brass fore-edge clasp is lettered "MAN". "Man" for Mancz, it is not clear whether Dickmut and Mancz were working together or whether Mancz was simply supplying material to Dinckmut. The covers are richly ornated, mainly with a scroll "maria" and a griffin. Four original brass bosses on corners and one in center of both covers. Red initial-strokes and underlining. This is the only edition of these sermons by Johannes Laegeler (or Lagenator) (ca. 1380-1440), who taught theology at Heidelberg and served as court preacher to Elector Ludwig III of the Palatinate. He represented the University of Heidelberg at the Council of Constance and served the Inquisition. Many marginal contemporary notes in brown and red ink in the margins. Very fine copy, in its original binding, very fresh. ISTC ij00315000. Goff J-315. BMC II 533. GW M13582. - -.
