About This Item

Santa Rosa, Ca: Black Sparrow Press, 1990. Octavo. Uncorrected Proof copy. 375 pages. The uncorrected proof was mailed to Lee Hendrix (co-owner of Either/Or Books of Hermosa Beach) and signed by John Martin publisher of Black Sparrow Press. What makes it interesting is there are 15 places where she detected typos (but not suggesting Bukowski's unique style be changed). A good example is on page 58 line 15 where canie was typed for came, also page 87 where on 17 Buk had typed Torm instead of Tom. His note mentions three New Year's booklets of Bukowski which he suggested she might give to her best customers. The booklets are being listed separately and not included in the uncorrected proof copy. [Krumhansl 114a note p. 132, 4th paragraph] An unknown number of perfect bound copies of the uncorrected proofs were printed in light tan wrappers with black lettering and rules across the front cover. When the corrected edition was issued, a review slip was laid in. small wrinkle to head of spine. A near fine copy.

Synopsis

Charles Bukowski is one of America's best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose, and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in Andernach, Germany, and raised in Los Angeles, where he lived for fifty years. He published his first story in 1944, when he was twenty-four, and began writing poetry at the age of thirty-five. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp (1994).
