The author-artist was born in Mexico to American and Mexican parents; he attended high school and college in the US and now lives in Mexico. This book won the Tomás Rivera and Pura Belpré awards, among others. First edition (first printing, with a numberline ending in 1). A fine copy in a fine dust jacket. Inscribed with a small drawing of a sun face, "To Mary, Enjoy this libro! Duncan Tonatiuh." Uncommon signed. No award medals on the covers, thus the first issue of the dust jacket.
