About This Item

New York, USA: Illustrated Editions Co, 1930. 1st Thus . Hardcover. Near Fine/Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Blaine, Mahlon. 192pp, with numerous line drawing illustrations all by Mahlon Blaine. Quarter bound in leatherette over textured cloth, with gilded red vignette on front board. All edges coloured. (Boards very gently rubbed at corners and spine ends). Internally, a hint of toning else neat, clean and tight. In its original chipped and worn dust jacket (couple of nicks on creased spine, lower leading corner cracked). Sterne was one of the two or three members of the clergy who chose to write of love and its pleasures despite the strictness of his calling. A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy might very properly be called 'A Romantic Mission', for this account of the clerical Casanova's travels is little less than a veritable chronicle of encounters and intimacies with the gentler sex ranging from chamber maid to Duchess, from grisette to Marquisina. It is one of our rich literary gifts out of the past. The artisitic creations and drawings which are part of this delux edition compliment it beautiful. Jacket fitted with archival-quality mylar wrapper to protect & prolong its life. It is not adhered to the book or to the jacket.

Synopsis

Irish-born Laurence Sterne graduated from Cambridge in 1737 and took holy orders, becoming a prebend in York Cathedral. His masterpiece, The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy made him a celebrity but ill-health necessitated recuperative travel and A Sentimental Journey grew out of seven-month trip through France and Italy. He died the year it was published, 1768.
