About This Item
Orbis Books, 2016. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Fine. Association copy, with a post-it on the title page from this anthology's editor Brian Doyle--the much beloved, late essayist and posthumous winner of the John Burroughs Medal--written to contributor Father Charles Gordon: "Charles--See pg. 181, and thank you. Brian." Gordon's essay "Why I Am a Priest" begins on that page. Uncommon or scarce signed in any form, this anthology collects "The World's Best Writers on the Sacred, the Profane, & the Ordinary" from the Portland (University) magazine that Doyle long edited, and which Annie Dillard called "the best spiritual magazine in the country." The anthology's contributors also include a who's who of contemporary environmental writing: Barry Lopez, Mary Oliver, Pattiann Rogers, Edward Hoagland, Ian Frazier, Pico Iyer, Kathleen Dean Moore, Rick Bass, William Stafford, David James Duncan, Paul Hawken, and many others. Gordon was a professor of theology at the University of Portland, and thus a close colleague of Doyle, who died of brain cancer in 2017, the year after the publication of this volume. Fine book in wrappers. // Wood (+) River (=) Books specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, and environmental literature, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions.

About Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
