About This Item

New York: Sterling Publishing Company. Near Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1987. First American Edition. Hardcover. 0806966106 . The author is British, and this book was first published by Batsford in the U. K. How nice to have an American art form appreciated abroad! The book gives a brief history of the remarkable Seminole Indians. When the majority were expelled from Florida in 1842 after a bloody war, much to the disgrace of Andrew Jackson, a small group of perhaps 300 refused to leave. Instead, they fled into the Everglades and lived there in isolation, where the tradition of patchwork was developed. Photos showing them garbed from head to toe in traditional clothing seem surprising, since they were living in intense heat and humidity, but I suppose that, like the Arabs, they found that there were advantages to being thus clothed in tropical conditions. Those bitey insects, for example! The book is pristine except for an owner's signature on the flyleaf. The jacTket is preserved by a mylar Brodart cover. THe photos, disappointingly, are all black and white: you'll have to supply the color yourself. .
