About This Item

London: John Lane The Bodley Head LTD (1928), 1928. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/very near Fine. 8vo. [5], vi-xxx, [4], 1-217, [1] pp. Black publisher's cloth with a gilt decoration and gilt lettering on the front board and spine. Decorative purple and cream endpapers and pastedowns. With several illustrated plates and decorations by Harry Clarke. Introduction by Humbert Wolfe. Without the slipcase. Algernon Swinburne's poems were largely known for their sexually explicit material, shocking to certain readers of the Victorian Age. He wrote prolifically, producing many essays of literary criticism, and several collections of shorter fiction and poems. Swinburne's use of language is adept, and creates ethereal but gloomy imagery. This edition contains illustrations which capture the nature of the poems perfectly. The top textblock is somewhat dust-soiled, bookplate on the front pastedown.
