About This Item
Signed by author on the title page plus signed piece of ephemera (Harbourfront, Toronto, Canada reading series June 1990 5-3/8 x 8-1/2 flat folded to 5-3/8 x 3-1/4 inches)
Four plays ( 'Master Harold'. And The Boys; Blood Knot; Hello And Goodbye; Boesman And Lena ) in this New Selection of Athol Fugard's best work are set among the people and in the place he knows most intimately - Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Each explores a close and tense family situation or relationship against the background of the wider suffering and tensions, engaging our sympathies for South Africans of all races in their struggle to retain dignity and hope.
Athol Harold Lannigan Fugard was born June 11, 1932, Middelburg, South Africa. Dramatist, actor, and director who became internationally known for his penetrating and pessimistic analyses of South African society during the apartheid period. He is best known for his political plays opposing the system of apartheid and for the 2005 Oscar-winning film of his novel Tsotsi, directed by Gavin Hood. Acclaimed as "the greatest active playwright in the English-speaking world" by Time in 1985.
