The author, Notto Thelle, offers this book as a spiritual antidote to our alienated world by inviting the reader to a personal encounter with God. Faith is described as a spacious landscape in which one can breathe freely. Faith engages, says the author, the rich imagery of the Bible, in order to help the individual find orientation without feeling imprisoned.

Notto Thelle here makes comparisons with faith as it is found in other religious traditions, searching out what is of value. Some of the chapters of the book began as sermons and are now presented in written, developed form. Others are new essays.

The author is professor of theology at the University of Oslo, Norway. He specializes in systematic theology and interreligious dialogue, especially with the religions of Asia.
