About This Item

New York:: Farrar, Straus & Young, 1953.. Book Club Edition.. Hardbound . BINDING/CONDITION: red binding with black spine text; the top edge tint is red; a Very Good book, with a Good dust jacket.. 8vo (8.5 inches tall) . Description: The author's first novel, Tell Your Sons, was an historical novel of the Napoleonic period. This novel is set in the turbulent days when France was torn by violence and revolution, and Napoleon was merely a hired artilleryman. The young Dauphin;, only royal survivor of the guillotine, was a captive, being deliberately corrupted by lewd practices. To provide themselves with a king, Royalists stole the Dauphin and persuaded young, aristocratic Jeanne de France to conceive a child by him. It is the tragic, dedicated figure of Jeanne -- almost a child herself in the midst of the dark and swirling mobs of revolution -- that dominates the story. Out of the dungeons and tumbrils of France's bloodiest time comes her tale, giving you an intimate view of a little known segment of history.
