About This Item

Unread 4th printing from The Folio Society, London. Cover has a couple of very mildly faded spots.

A clothbound, illustrated edition of the infamous children's tale The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnet.

The story takes place in Misselthwaite Manor which holds two mysteries: a strange unhappy crying in the night and a walled garden with a door locked and forgotten for ten years. On the day a robin shows Mary where the key lies buried, the magic begins.

The author, Frances Hodgson Burnett, remembered such a garden from her own childhood and turned it fifty years later into one of the most popular of children's books of all time. In this evocation of a garden's enchantment is a heartfelt belief that the healing power of nature will transform children and adults alike.

This Folio edition is illustrated by one of the most accomplished artists of the golden age of children's illustration, Charles Robinson.

Bound in cloth, blocked in gold and green with a design based on the endpapers from the 1911 edition.
Set in Bulmer.
Eight original full-page colour paintings by Charles Robinson.
Book Size: 9 inches x 6.25 inches, 288 pages.

Synopsis

The Secret Garden, written by Frances Hodgson Burnett, has remained one of the most popular children’s books since its publication in The American Magazine in 1910. The story tells of childhood emotions and experiences while keeping the central theme - if something is cared for, it will thrive.  The Secret Garden  introduces us to a sour little girl, Mary Lennox, who is NOT a pleasure to be around. In fact, she yells like a little princess, can't make friends, and simply despises everything. She remains quite contrary until she helps her garden grow - and finds someone worse off than herself to bring along for the ride.  Burnett was a British American novelist and playwright, best known for her novels  Little Lord Fauntleroy , A Little Princess, and The Secret Garden . She regularly found inspiration through her observations of nature and the walled gardens at Maytham Hall in Kent England. The American Magazine published the first edition of The Secret Garden  in 1910
