About This Item

Paris: H. J. Jansen et Comp, (1795). First edition.. Light edge wear to the leather, mild foxing to a few plates; a tight and clean copy in very good condition.. Pp. xliv, 304; 426; 525, (2); with 22 engraved plates (5 are folding). Contemporary full brown calf leather, spine in newer calf with black morocco title label lettered in gilt, spine decorated with gilt panel lines, 8vo. This set documents the second voyage of the intrepid French traveler, Le Vaillant, from Cape Town up the western coast reaching and crossing the Orange River into Namibia. This feat, long disputed, was later proven to be true. A noteworthy account of early travel into Namaqualand, Namibia, Damaraland, Bechuanaland and the Kalahari Desert. Many of the engraved plates depict the unusual mammals species encountered as well as the native people Le Vaillant met. Armorial bookplate of De Villiers listing Dan and Leonie / Peter and Merle on the front endpaper of each volume, with the signature of P. de Villiers above each bookplate.
