INSCRIBED and dated on the front endpaper by Gore Vidal to his friend and Harcourt, Brace editor Don Wickenden: "Dear Don- get well ever - Gore (Panajachel, remember me?) - 1949." Wickenden's annotations in manuscript pencil appear throughout the book, on the margins.
