New York: Follett, Foster and Co., 1863. First American edition. A touch of light marginal foxing to the first 20 pages of the text; a very bright and clean copy in near fine condition.. Pp. viii, (2), (11)-405. Publisher's original dark green pebble cloth, spine is lettered in gilt and with gilt floral decorations at the base of the spine, front and rear covers are elaborately-stamped in blind, salmon-pink endpapers, 8vo. According to the London Athenaeum, this work 'is another of M. Michelet's dreamy volumes, half science and half fancy with a blending in both of sensuous suggestion.' The author 'discourses upon marine terrors and beauties (from the frontis-matter of the work). Small nineteenth century sailing-ship bookplate of P. Dorr on front endpaper. This could be Ebenezer Pearson Dorr (1817 - 1881) who was a merchant sailor, insurance executive, and meteorologist. Dorr was born in Hartford, Vermont. In 1838, Dorr settled in Buffalo, New York, and became a sailor on the Great Lakes (modified after Wiki).
