About This Item

Princeton, New Jersey: Princeton University Press, 1977. 4to size cloth or buckram bound hardcover with illustrated dust jacket; 141 pages followed by a section of 142 black and white plates on glossy stock From jacket: "To relate Degas' sculpture to his development as a whole and to 19th century art, (the author) examined the original waxes in the Mellon collection. In them he found not only further proof of the artist's genius, but also evidence that his achievement included the creation of the first modernist sculpture. The present book offers a full appraisal of Degas' work in this field, complemented by 144 illustrations of the waves, and of work in other media and by other artists important to his sculptural development. The author considers Degas' bronzes in relation to 19th century art, exploring the influence of the artists's personality and the evolution of his style. By correlating stylistic refinements with the evidence of documents, (the author) succeeds in establishing a more precise dating than has heretofore been possible. He provides a detailed account of how Degas worked in this medium, of his sources and of the technical problems involved." Edgewear, bumped top of jacket spine, scratches on back of jacket and a quarter inch tear to top of back of jacket. Please note: some of our photographs are cropped images of the actual artwork. No additional shipping charges for this heavy item if shipped with US Media Mail. . First. Cloth. Good/Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
