With the invention of printing in the 15th century, the writing-master was able to broadcast his model and instruction to the world in 'writing books'. Many has survived, the most being written in Latin, Italian and Spanish. The book has fulfilled a longstanding need by providing translations of all the basic texts in a single volume with detailed biographical and technical commentary. It is the first large-scale and systematic collection of its kind.
