About This Item

Berkeley: Ten Speed Press, 1981 8vo. original printed paper wraps (rubbed & a little creased, spine slightly sunned); pp. [ii], 164, with numerous illustrations. A very good copy. [Neate W65: The most famous of all mountaineering books. Whymper was a young wood engraver who became obsessed with the first ascent of the Matterhorn. The price he had to pay for achieving this was the loss of his companions in the most celebrated mountain disaster of all time. His one other great expedition was in 1880 to the Andes of Ecuador. Although his writings and lecturing brought him success, his life may be said to have been ruined by the tragedy which followed his moment of triumph].. Facsimile. Soft Cover. VG.
