About This Item

[Edinburgh]: [printed by J. M’Donald], 1835. Oblong small folio, pp. [ii], 10, 2, [2] + 48 lithographs and one partially hand-coloured map. Bound following the Subscriber’s list is a slip titled ‘Additional Subscribers’, containing 16 printed names and 21 more in manuscript; at the end of the text an advertisement slip for ‘Stories from the History of Wales’ amended in manuscript to read ‘Tales about Wales, 2d edition’. Original green pebbled cloth, printed paper label to front board. Faint foxing to plates, margins toned, one plate cut a little close at fore-edge. Cloth scuffed, extremities worn, hinges cracking and front flyleaf attached with archival tape. Bookplate and ownership inscription of Archibald Walker (the latter struck through). A scarce collection, originally issued in 8 parts by subscription. The plates are by E. C. Campbell, or Mrs Robert Campbell, as she is referred to on the printed cover label. This book-form edition contains all the plates but somewhat different letterpress, which evidently varied over time: we have handled another copy with the ‘Additional Subscribers’ list containing 40 printed names and a list of the plates on the verso. The parts wrappers also had imprints, though the names of the printers varied (some giving Nimmo, others Bell); a colophon with the name of J. M’Donald appears on the verso of the subscriber’s list here. COPAC locates two copies at the NLS, one in Cambridge, and one in the National Art Library; Worldcat adds no others.
