About This Item
London: Chapman & Hall, 1933. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 7.5" by 5". None. A smart first edition of this entertaining and humorous novel about journalists by Evelyn Waugh. First edition. A satire of sensationalist journalist from foreign correspondents, following a young William Boot, loosely based on Waugh's fellow reporter at the Daily Mail, William Deedes. Boot lives in genteel poverty, contributes to the Daily Beast, a national daily newspaper, and is strongarmed into becoming a foreign correspondent when the editors mistake him for a fashionable novelist John Courteney Boot. Written by Evelyn Waugh, an English novelist, biographer, travel writer, journalist, and book reviewer known for his early satires Decline and Fall, and A Handful of Dust. From the library of the son of Joyce Gill, a life-long friend of Evelyn Waugh. Joyce and Evelyn had a passionate affair during the annulment of Evelyn"s first marriage to "She-Evelyn". The pair were introduced sometime around Christmas in 1923 at a nightclub in Fitzrovia, their affair seeming to come to a head in the summer of 1935, when Evelyn invited Joyce to leave her husband and join him on his travels to Abyssinia. In the original patterned cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light shelf wear to the extremities. Fading to the spine and the odd mark to the board. Residue from stickers to the tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd spot. Light age toning to the endpapers. Very Good
Synopsis
In SCOOP , a "newspaper adventure," Evelyn Waugh tells the tale of garden coulumnist William Boot gets sent to Ishmaelia to cover a war, finds everything but a war, and returns as a golden child of British media. Altogether a fine, ascerbic, British satire on the print media in the 1930's.
