About This Item

Brooklyn, NY: Pratt Institute. Hardcover. Fair+/None. Distinct gilt titling on covers with blindstamped decorative border. Gilt titling on spine. Front boards edges sunned. Ring stains on 1901-1902. Wonderful prelim, (17, 21, 21 pp.), internal, and terminal ads, (25, 23, 19 pp.), including an illustrated Ivory soap ad, 'Thus its purity attracts the rich; its economy attracts the poor.' The frontispiece in the 1908 volume pictures William C. Stimpson, faculty member and head of foundry work and forging at Pratt, along with his signature on the protective tissue, which appears to be in facsimile. Edgeworn, bumped and soiled to be sure, and a couple pages on the 1908-'09 spotted, but what a wealth inside. INSIDE: In addition to the regular trustees and alumni listings, articles on the Accuracy of Different Methods of Quantitative Analysis of Copper, Pneumatic Shop Appliances, Design of a Combined Pump and Air Compressor for Steam Vehicles, Efficiency Test of Rotary Converter, The Saw Mill and Its Machinery, Tests of a Direct Current Arc Lamp, Quantitative Analysis of Arsenic, A Test of Twisted Joints in Galvanized Iron Wire, Steam Engine Testing, Efficiency of Incandescent Lamp Filaments, (oh, the days before CFL bulbs!), Determination of Carbon Dioxide in Air, The Construction of an Armature Winding for a Five H. P. Motor, The Elevation of the Elastic Limit by Repeated Loading, Standardizing Electric Instruments, and the installation of an electric light plant in Newfoundland, spearheaded by Dr. W. T. Grenfell, a missionary among the fishermen in Canada and a lecturer at Pratt in 1907. Originated in 1887, the Pratt Institute comprises five schools and is a top college nationally and in the northeast. Illus. with B&W photographs. 94, 91, 178 pp.
