Robert Jennings. London. 1826. First edition, Large Paper. Engraved title. Dedication to the Countess of Pembroke, 60 tissue guarded engraved plates with accompanying text, as indexed, vignette. Half calf, marbled boards. Spine in six compartments with raised bands, gilt lettering and motifs. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Marbled endpapers. Light variable foxing. Spotting to engraved title page. A handsome copy with historic provenance.

Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Batty (1789-1848) army officer and artist Batty compiled books illustrated with plates etched by himself. He served in the Peninsular War, in the Duke of Wellington's 1815 Campaign, at Waterloo, where he was injured in the thigh. "Following Wellington's victory, Batty entered Paris with the 3rd battalion on 7 July, having en route been at the storming of the fortress of Péronne on 26 June. Three days later, he became a lieutenant and captain in the first guards. He served in the army of occupation in France." He was elected FRS in 1822. "Batty acted as Lieutenant-General Sir William Clinton's aide-de-camp with the 1826–7 expedition to Portugal in support of the young Portuguese queen against Spanish-backed rebels." ODNB.

Walter Herries (or Harris) was a pamphleteer who participated in the first Darien "adventure." Upon his return to England, he was offered inducements by English politicians to write a book that would ruin the reputation of the members of the Darien Company. His book was "Declared by a royal proclamation to be a 'false, scandalous, and traitorous libel'."

This book, attributed to Ridpath, is an answer to Herries's book, and an attack on English politicians. Ridpath was a Scottish journalist who wrote and supported Whig interests against the Tories.

This book is bound with leather covers and a cloth spine. There is a label on the front cover which is not readable. New endsheets have been added at some point in the book's long history, but the original endsheets and covers are present. There is a former owner's inscription on the original front endsheet. Pages are intact and the binding is tight. The book contains black & white drawings of muscles, bones, and bandages. There is an index for medicines and an extensive table of contents of body parts, diseases, syndromes, and treatments. Printed in the year 1846, the book itself is, in essence, a time capsule that portrays how medicine was practiced aboard an early nineteenth century sailing ship. This will make a wonderful addition to the library of the collector of medical memorabilia.

The Deserted Village is a poem by Oliver Goldsmith published in 1770. It is a work of social commentary, and condemns rural depopulation and the pursuit of excessive wealth. The poem is written in heroic couplets, and describes the decline of a village and the emigration of many of its residents to America. In the poem, Goldsmith criticises rural depopulation, the moral corruption found in towns, consumerism, enclosure, landscape gardening, avarice, and the pursuit of wealth from international trade. The poem employs, in the words of one critic, "deliberately precise obscurity", and does not reveal the reason why the village has been deserted. The poem was very popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but also provoked critical responses, including from other poets such as George Crabbe. The book contains "Other Tales and Sketches, from Bentley's Miscellany, and the Library of Fiction" including a story by James Fenimore (spelled "Fennimore" on the contents page) Cooper titled "An Evening of Visits." There are 11 stories in all - please see the photos for the complete list of contents. This is one of the first stories by Dickens published in book form in the United States.Condition:Worn corners (the tips of the boards are exposed); 1/2" cloth tears at the top edge of the spine, small cloth tears at the bottom edge.
