About This Item

London: T. N. Longman and O. Rees. Good with no dust jacket. 1804. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. FIRST EDITION. This copy has been re-spined at some point in the distant past, and although the boards are a (presumed) contemporary full tree calf, the re-spining is in a heavy tan 'buckram' with a large, but attractive, leather Title label in dark burgungy with bright gilt titling and decoration. The covers are somewhat worn and scratched, with the corners and some edges of the book scraped through to the board, but it is solid, tight and all hinges are secure. The front pastedown has the attractive heraldic bookplate of 'Ld Bulkeley'. Both inner hinges have been strengthened with a buckram tape. (2) , viii, + 634, (2) pp. Including the Frontispiece the book is Illustrated with 12 Full page Tinted lithographs of South Wales views. The very large Fold-out map of South Wales is folded before Chapter One - the folds having caused that first page to crease down the centre. One of the 'Classic' Histories of South Wales including Traditions and Legends, etc. The views are : - The Fall of the Rydoll, New Bridge, Caerphilly Castle, The Pass from Pontneath Vechan to Merthyr, Aberedwy, Rhayder, The Upper Fall at Havod, Havod Inn, Pembroke Town and Castle, Llaugharne Castle, Melin court Fall and Briton Ferry. Internally the book, however, with the proviso of a few patches of light brown and similar age indications here and there, is Overall VERY CLEAN TIGHTand BRIGHT. It's much nicer than it sounds and IS COMPLETE! . "Malkin's best known work is an account of his travels in South Wales in 1803... Which was described as by far the best of old Travel books on South Wales - acute and interesting in its observation, usually tolerant in its judgements, with a substantial knowledge of Welsh history and (up to a point) of Welsh literature." . See Images; 4to Large Heavy Thick .
