The major difference between free-flight and radio-controlled scale models is that all adjustments to the flight pattern of the former must be made before release or, put it another way, they must be capable of stable flight, both under power and on the glide, without the opportunity of in-flight alterations. This is a challenge most surely met by lightly loaded, slow-flying models based on full-size machines having those characteristics, best typified by early biplanes, and a leading exponent of scale models whith this approach was the late Eric Coates. His series of articles in Aeromodeller magazine in the early 1970s is still regarded as the classic exposition on the subject, as relevant today as when first written.
