London: Leonard Smithers, 1896. Hardback. Good Only. 10" by 7.5". Various. The first ever issue of 'The Savoy', a popular late Victorian illustrated periodical produced by friends of Oscar Wilde. Issue number 1 of 'The Savoy', published in January 1896.This issue includes 'Zola: The Man and His Work' by Havelock Ellis, 'A Good Prince' by Max Beerbohm, 'Dieppe: 1895' by Arthur Symons, 'Under the Hill' by Aubrey Beardsley, 'A Golden Decade in English Art', and more. Illustrated with an engraved title page, engraved contents page, and nineteen plates and in-text illustrations.Collated, complete.'The Savoy' was an illustrated quarterly of literature, art, and criticism. The magazine, dubbed 'a manifesto in revolt against Victorian materialism', only published eight issues from January to December 1896. A competitor of 'The Yellow Book' the magazine published works from the members of the Decadent movement, as the movement began to decline after the imprisonment of Oscar Wilde.From January-April the periodical was published in two quarterly issues, and became monthly for six months from July to December.Published by Leonard Smithers, a controversial man friends with Oscar Wilde, known for erotic and pornographic works, and for sometimes binding books in human skin. Smithers begun this magazine alongside writer Arthur Symons and the artist Aubrey Beardsley.With illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley, Joseph Pennell, Louis Oury, W. Rothenstein, and more.Four pages of adverts to the front. In the original publisher's paper covered boards. Externally, boards are detached but present. Lacking the backstrip. Some rubbing and discolouration to the boards, with a few light marks. Minor bumping to the extremities. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front paste down. Internally, binding is strained. Pages are bright and generally clean with some spots. Good Only
