About This Item

New York: Harper & Row, 1962. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. First edition, with correct date code (reprints also state first edition). Fine in an attractive, near fine dustwrapper with a long, but unobtrusive tear on the front panel, and a couple of tiny nicks and tears. Author's first book and only novel, succeeded by a posthumously published collection of science-fiction short stories. McKenna enlisted in the Navy and served for ten years in the Far East, two of them on a Yangtze River gunboat, an experience which served as the basis for this novel. After his retirement from the Navy he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to study writing. *The Sand Pebbles* was the 1963 Harper Prize novel chosen by Louis Auchincloss, Philip Roth, and Elizabeth Janeway, but McKenna died soon afterwards in 1964. It was the basis for the excellent Robert Wise film featuring Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, Richard Crenna, and Candice Bergen in her second film. A much nicer than usual copy.
