About This Item
Original Handmade Copy. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 4 1/2 X 6 1/2 Inches. 28 PP. Original circa 1918 handmade WWI children's book. Includes 26 full page plates of American soldiers in various wartime positions. Each depiction accompanied by an affixed hand-typed rhyming description on the verso. Wrapped in fringed cloth likely cut from an article of issued clothing. A "Sammie" (or Sammy) was the nickname given to American soldiers during WWI by their British counterparts. The name derived from the soldiers provided by good ole Uncle Sam. Each page originally bound with a strip of cloth tape which is now defunct (so pages are loose). Cloth starting to pull away from rear and some fraying at edges. A very interesting book that is as much folk art as it is military antique.
