About This Item
London: Methuen, 1925 . First edition. Cloth. Good/Good. 8" by 5.5". None. The first edition, first impression of this humorous P.G. Wodehouse novel, in a very scarce later issue dust wrapper. The first edition, first impression of this work, with six titles listed facing the title page, ending with 'Bill the Conqueror', and with eight pages of advertisements to the rear, dated '825'. McIlvaine A35a.In an unclipped later dust wrapper. While the first issue dust wrapper is priced 7/6, this later issue wrapper is priced 2/6. The reference to 'The Small Bachelor', published in 1927, to the rear wrap, and reference to no later titles, indicates that this is likely a 1927 dust wrapper. Copies of this first edition in any dust wrapper are very scarce.Previously serialised in the Saturday Evening Post, this Wodehouse novel follows the misadventures of Sam Shotter, a struggling writer who unexpectedly becomes the secretary to a wealthy and eccentric American. Sam finds himself caught up in a series of chaotic events involving romance, mistaken identities, and shady business dealings, all set against the backdrop of the English countryside. With the inscription of M.C.Dozer, 1925, to the front free endpaper, and a further inscription to the half title.A smart Wodehouse first edition, in a scarce dust wrapper. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with unclipped dust wrapper. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with light marks to front board, and a touch of fading to back strip. Hinges starting, with boards firmly held. Inscriptions to front free endpaper and half title. Losses of paper to dust wrapper back strip head and tail, with small hole to front wrap and fold of front flyleaf. Minor losses and light chipping to wrap head and tail, with neat tape reinforcements to head of rear wrap. Discolouration and closed tear to back strip, repaired with tape to the reverse. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright, with the odd light handling mark or spot to page perimeters. Good
