About This Item

Simon & Schuster, 1983. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Advanced uncorrected proof, softcover, inscribed on the front end free paper: "For Joe Libs [sp?], with all my thanks for this unlikely bestseller -- Joan Didion, April 7 83." An apparent association copy, probably to someone who helped promote or edit the book, etc., but we can't identify the recipient. Scarce signed in this format in any case. Yellow perfect-bound wraps, lightly soiled and with a few stray, small streaks to the cover. Very faint foxing to upper edge of text block and to FFEP/final page. Quarter-inch split to wraps at bottom of spine. Pages are hand-numbered. // Wood (+) River (=) Books specializes in place-based and environmental literature, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions.

Synopsis

Joan Didion was born in California and lives in New York City. She is the author of five novels and seven previous books of nonfiction.

About Rural Hours

Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
