London,: Melmoth & Co., 1904.. In-8 p. legataura in tela editoriale azzurra (piatto anter. con abrasione, e tracce dorate al poster.), titolo impresso in oro al dorso con la data 1905, pp. 75 + 1 c.b., con le magnifiche 16 illustrazioni di Aubrey Beardsley (elencate su 1 tav. figurata), i.e. con l'intero apparato iconografico realizzato dall'artista inglese, che era stato in parte censurato nella prima versione del 1894. La prima edizione autorizzata ad includere i disegni censurati fu stampata nel 1907. La ns. del 1904 è una rara “edizione pirata”, pubblicata in soli 250 esemplari numerati su carta a mano (inclusa una tiratura di 50 su “special deluxe Japanese vellum”). Al ns. esempl. manca l'occhietto che riportava al verso la tiratura ed il numero della copia. Questo celeberrimo dramma fu scritto da Wilde in francese e pubblicato a Parigi nel 1893 (la traduzione in inglese fu effettuata da Lord Douglas). Cfr. Mason's Bibliography of Oscar Wilde (1914), n. 355 per la prima ediz. del 1907 - Benezit,I, p. 919 che di Aubrey Beardsley (1872-98) cosi' precisa: "excellent dessinateur, artiste d'une originalité qui le plaça parmi les figures les plus intéressantes dans l'évolution de l'illustration". Nel ns. esempl. i risg. e la prima carta (elenco dei protagonisti) con aloni, altrimenti molto ben conservato.

Synopsis

Salome is a tragic play written by Oscar Wilde, which tells the biblical story of Salome. Salome dances the Dance of the Seven Veils so well that she receives a boon from her stepfather Herod Antipas. Much to his dismay and her mother's delight she requests the head of John the Baptist on a silver platter. Though John is a favorite of Herod and under his protection, Herod cannot rescind his boon.Wilde originally wrote the play in French, and it was translated three years later into English.
