About This Item

Institut fur Europaische Ethnologie und Kulturforschung der Universitat Marburg, Marburg, Marburg, 1986; First Edition; Signed; 8vo, 88 pages; illustrated. A volume of writings from numerous colleagues and friends of Robert Bartlett Haas, presented as a tribute on the occasion of his 70th birthday, together with a "bio-bibliography" by Haas himself, in which he reveals his views on life, art, and education, plus a complete bibliography of his books and monographs, articles and prefaces, editorships, translations, professional writings, lectures and appreciations, interviews, articles about, reviews by, and works in progress. Haas, most known for his works on Gertrude Stein (who dubbed him "Bobolink"), Eadweard Muybridge, and William Grant Still, was for many years head of U.C.L.A. Extension’s huge Department Of Art And Humanities, and was instrumental in the artistic "coming of age" of Los Angeles. Considered the embodiment of the Renaissance Man, he was described by a close colleague as the possessor of "three most valuable qualities: an extraordinary breadth of curiosity, a fortuitous double talent for visualizing the broad sweep of a subject and then seeking out its crucial minutiae, and, finally, a graceful literary style that makes it all worth reading." Warmly inscribed and signed on the title page by Haas to Anna Bing Arnold, renowned Los Angeles art patron and philanthropist. Entirely in English. Very Good Plus, in photo-illustrated card wraps.
