About This Item

Doubleday & Company, 1971 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 349 pages, indicws: general, biblical, Word, Accadian, Ugaritic, Semitic, Sanskrit, Hebrew/Aramaic, Syriac, Arabic/Persian, Greek, and Latin all have a separate index. Corners lightly bumped, slight crimping at the spine ends. The dust jacket is most visibly worn at the spine ends and shows white against the protective cover backing, spider-webish creasing and rubbing on the corners, a bit of wear to the edges proper, price-clipped. Text and edges are clean, binding strong and compact. Overall, a very good first printing with a presentable dust jacket..

Synopsis

Where did God come from? What do the bible stories really tell us? Who or what was Jesus Christ? This book challenges everything we think we know about the nature of religion -- The ancient fertility cult at the heart of Christianity -- The living power of cultic rites and symbols -- The sacred mushroom as the emblem and embodiment of divinity -- The secret meaning of biblical myths -- The language of religion that links us to our ancestors. The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross sets out John Allegro's questthrough a family tree of languages to find the truth about where Christianity came from.
