About This Item
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1960. Admittedly speculative biography of the Shoshone woman whose knowledge & assistance was essential to Lewis & Clark's success; while clearly striving to be culturally sensitive, this is still very much a product of the American 1950s, one of a series of intermediate readers designed for children from ages 9 to 12, "about the men and women who have made history in North America, emphasizing the childhood traits of character that led to their adult achievements." Curiously scarce, as if 1960s boys did not want to read about a girl, and 1960s girls had little interest in Indians. Hardcover in jacket, as pictured; later printing, lacking the date on the title page. Light wear to book; jacket shows minor rubbing & light edgwear with several small chips. Text clean; 192 pages, two-color drawings, maps. . Later Printing. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Illus. by Lorence Bjorklund. Small Octavo.
