About This Item

NY: Knopf, 1963. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Near fine. Twelfth printing, 1977. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For my Icelandic friend George Hanson, who will understand the meaning of ancient Runic inscription. Best wishes, Sigurd F Olson." George Hanson was a college librarian and book collector in Chicago, with a special passion for and scholarly interest in Iceland, and a copy of his obituary is laid in. Illustrated by Robert Hines. A book that "expresses his feelings about the haunting appeal of wilderness" with a special concentration on the territory of the Canadian border and further north through Alaska.

Brown cloth with gold stamping and a loon in red, turquoise top stain. Hanson's name stamp to pastedown. Near fine or better in a near fine jacket with a little rubbing to rear panel and subtle tape reinforcement to top of spine (no tears).

About Rural Hours

Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
