Title continued: "Comprising the various Sounds of the Vowels and Consonants, denoted by typographical Characters, and illustrated by Examples, which render it intelligble to the weakest Capacity; It Exhibits Their True Pronunciation . . . upon a Plan Perfectly Plain and Entirely New; to which is added the Scripture proper Names . . . The fourth Brookfield edition, carefully revised and corrected, and enriched with the addition of more than two thousand words not inserted in former editions. . . . Printed by E. Merriam & Co. for Elijah Burbank, sold wholesale and retail by him in Worcester, and by most of the booksellers in the New England states, October 1809." 516 p. ; 15 cm. Original full calf with gilt-tooled red leather spine label reading "Perry's Dictionary." Appendix has separate title page, also dated Oct. 1809, with continuous pagination. Shaw & Shoemaker, 18367. Front endpapers bear names of former owners: Lois Sawyer, Lois Bacheldor, and John Bacheldor, of Newbury. In Good Condition: leather is rubbed; starting to separate along back joint from head of spine for 1 cm.; front free endpaper detached but present; lower corner of pp. 21-22, upper corner of pp. 37-38, and lower corner of 319-20 lacking, with loss of text; lacking back free endpaper; scattered light soiling.
