Description:
1537 1ed Orthodox Saint John Chrysostom On the Priesthood + Brixius Marburg

A rare 16th-century printing of works of John Chrysostom. Chrysostom was one of the most important Early Christian Church authors and preachers and is most remembered for his sermons and homilies. He preached on many different subjects, but his most frequented topic was helping the needy. Chrysostom calls for followers of Jesus to set aside their material desires to help the poor, often in a way that shamed the rich and guilted them in to giving.
"Do you pay such honor to your excrements as to receive them into a silver chamber-pot when another man made in the image of God is perishing in the cold?" (Chrysostom in Liebeschuetz)

One of his most important treatises was 'On the Priesthood' in which he describes his experiences becoming a priest and living as a priest. Interestingly, this work was popular during his lifetime as he made references to it in his other works.
This extremely rare 16th-century edition of 'On the… Read More

Written in the year Japan opened its doors to foreign trade (but published three years later), by the first British Consul to Nagasaki, Christopher Pemberton Hodgson (he also served as French Consul). [New York]: [G. P. Putnam's Sons ("for private circulation")], 1892. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Octavo, 155pp., illustrated. A crisp, clean copy, very near fine, in the publisher's navy cloth. Bottom corners bumped, contemporary owner's name on the front free endpaper and again on the title page, else a nice, clean copy, with a few pages unopened. Extremely scarce memoir of this Civil War General from Indiana, who served as aide-de-camp to McClellan at the start of the war, then being elected to Congress, and later serving as Judge Advocate General of the US Army. During his time in the Indiana state Legislature and in the US Congress, he was a vocal opponent of the expansion of slavery into the west, and some of his speeches to that effect are included in this book. This privately printed volume was evidently produced in very small numbers; we count just two holdings in OCLC (Indiana State Library, App. State). Missed by Broadfoot, Nevins, etc. Untraced at auction. An elusive rarity among… Read More

Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. As New with no dust jacket. 2010. Facsimile Edition. Original Wrappers. 1108022677 . Stamped Damaged on verso title page. Light shelfwear. Otherwise in new condition. ; Paperback; Octavo; John Marshall (c.1784__1837) was a naval officer and biographer. He first went to sea at the age of nine, and by the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 had reached the rank of lieutenant. After the war, he started to research the lives of contemporary high-ranking naval officers, some of whose service reached as far back as 1760. These volumes, first published between 1823 and 1830, contain the results of this monumental research, and demonstrate the new 'cult' of the navy in the early nineteenth century. Some of the biographies were contributed by the officers themselves, with others containing private or official letters and other records. Organised according to seniority in rank, these volumes contain a wealth of fascinating information on the careers of… Read More

Trumansburg, NY: Out of Step Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 2016. Numbered Edition; First Printing. Pamphlet. The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows…) that led to me writing the poem "Quartering." Which was informed by them, of course, and by all the rooms I'm in, and by imagining what is really required of all the caregivers I love. It's a thought experiment: if we tore down the barracks at military hospitals and offered incentives for Americans in the surrounding neighborhoods to quarter injured service members, what would the honest instructions… Read More
