Textured cream cloth, with dark brown spine and front cover lettering. Black end papers. 192 pages, with Chronology. Former library copy, with the usual stickers, card pocket, and library markings. Covers are a bit splayed. End papers are creased. Illustrated dust-jacket, with call numbers at bottom of spine, is edge worn, and chipped at spine ends and corners. An ex-library, working copy of the hard cover edition of an important photography book. Due to size and weight, international shipping at cost.

In 1952 he became the first African American artist to receive a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship. He's originally from Harlem and his subjects are from contemporary urban culture. His photographs are in black and white. Roy DeCarava has signed on the flyleaf facing the title page (signature only).
