About This Item

This is a charming, antique children's song book, "Routledge's Singing Quadrille & Lancers." Circa 1880's (no publishing date is stated, but the year 1883 is handwritten at the front); George Routledge and Sons; London. The book is beautifully decorated with color illustrations (many are full-page) and black & white drawings throughout by Mrs. Staples, A. Chantry Corbould, and A.D. Longmuir. Decorative floral end papers. The book is grouped into "quadrilles" (a square dance type of song), and "lancers" (a set of five quadrilles, each in a different meter). Songs include Little-Bo-Peep, The Queen of Hearts, Tom Tom the Piper's Son, Simple Simon, Three Blind Mice, Mary Mary Quite Contrary, Hey-Diddle-Diddle, Jack and Jill, Baa-Baa-Black Sheep, Little Miss Moffat [sic], Little Jack Horner, Sing a Song of Sixpence, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Georgie Porgie, Old King Cole...and more. The book measures 11" tall x 9 1/4" wide.

Condition:
Clean covers and spine. Cloth tears at the cover corners, and at the top and bottom edges of the spine. There is a crack at the front hinge between the front end paper and frontispiece resulting in the front cover being shaky. The back cover is firmly attached. The pages are in nice condition with an occasional light smudge here and there (primarily at the outer margins), and a 1" tear at the outer edge of the title page. Name/date (1883) written in ink on the back of the frontispiece. Overall the book is in Good- condition.
