About This Item

U.S.A: Alfred A Knopf Inc, 2010. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 8vo - over 7?" - 9?" tall. Alfred A Knopf Inc., 2010. Hardback First Printing. Hardcover Book and Dust Jacket in Fine Condition. Thirty-two photographs and six maps. From the Pulitzer Prize finalist and National Book Critics Circle Award-winning author of "Newjack", this is an absorbing book about roads and their power to change the world. Ted Conover explores six of these key byways worldwide and the changes they will bring or have brought to societies. He reveals the costs and benefits of being connected - how, from ancient Rome to the present, roads have played a crucial role in human life, advancing civilization even as they set it back. Some examples of his travels follow. In Peru, he discussed a new east-west route across South America soon (if not already) to be constructed across the Amazon basin; In East Africa he visits truckers whose travels have been linked to the worldwide spread of AIDS; In a Himalayan valley, he explores how a new road will affect the now isolated Indian region of Ladakh. 333 pages with Notes, Bibliography, and Index. 6.5 x 9.6 inches. Alfred A Knopf, New York, 2010.
