The first US edition of this collection of the columns William Makepeace Thackery contributed to the Cornhill Magazine. Illustrated by Thackeray himself. The very scarce first US edition, published in the same year as the first UK edition, of William Makepeace Thackery's publication of a large number of the columns he contributed to the monthly Cornhill Magazine, of which he became editor in 1860. With a frontispiece and numerous full plate and vignette illustrations from the author himself.Including the essays 'On a Lazy Idle Boy', 'Tunbridge Toys', 'On a Hundred Years Hence', 'A Mississippi Bubble', and more.He greatly enjoyed writing these column's expressing a preference for his role as columnist over editorWith four pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Fading to back strip and board perimeters, with small loss of cloth to back strip head and tail. Internally, firmly bound. Pages a touch age toned, with the odd spot to tail of pages. Very Good

Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
