The Hogarth Press, 1961. Hardcover. Good/Good. 1961. Fourth Impression. 160 pages. Pictorial dust jacket over red cloth with gilt to spine. Black and white photographic plate as frontispiece. Pages are slightly tanned with mild foxing throughout. Faint tanning bands to end papers. Moderate tanning and foxing to text block edges. Boards have light shelf-wear with mild corner wear. Mild crushing and sunning to tail of spine. Gilt lettering is bright and clear. Clipped jacket has light edgewear with tears and creasing. Light rubbing and marking all over. Light foxing to rear panel. Mild tanning to spine. Mild tanning and foxing to inside.
Synopsis
LAURIE LEE was born in Stroud, Gloucestershire, in 1914, and was educated at Slad village school and Stroud Central School. At the age of nineteen he walked to London and then travelled on foot through Spain, where he was trapped by the outbreak of the Civil War. He later returned by crossing the Pyrenees, as described in his book As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning. In 1950 he married Catherine Polge and they had one daughter. Laurie Lee died in May 1997. In its obituary the Guardian wrote, "He has a nightingale inside him, a capacity for sensuous, lyrical precisions".
