About This Item

New York: William Morrow and Company, Inc, 1989. First edition. First printing [stated]. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. 608 pages. Illustrations. Sources. Notes. Index. Thomas Parrish is the author of a number of distinguished histories, including Roosevelt and Marshall: Partners in Politics and War. After serving in the United States Army, he received B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Chicago. His more than a dozen books include the Simon and Schuster Encyclopedia of World War II (chosen by the American Library Association as one of the two best reference books of 1978 and by Best Reference Books 1970-1980 as one of the three best U.S. historical reference works of the decade); Roosevelt and Marshall: Partners in Politics and War; The Cold War Encyclopedia; Berlin in the Balance, 1945-1949; The Submarine: A History; and To Keep the British Isles Afloat: FDR's Men in Churchill's London, 1941. In 1995, Tom received the University of Kentucky Libraries Medallion for Intellectual Excellence; and in 2006, he was awarded the Kentucky Literary Award for Nonfiction. Here is the first book to examine the unique partnership between Franklin Roosevelt and George C. Marshall. Provides personal glimpses of their clashes and compromises, their successes and shortcomings. In 1939 President Franklin D. Roosevelt picked Brigadier General George C. Marshall as army chief of staff over some 30 other competitors. During their six-year partnership, they set a high standard of civilian-military cooperation. Parrish describes the evolution of Roosevelt and Marshall's relationship with new insight into FDR's dominance of wartime strategy and Marshall's skill in working with Congress. The chief of staff yearned to lead the Allied Forces in Europe, but Roosevelt claimed Marshall was indispensable to him at home, and appointed Dwight Eisenhower to the European theater. Marshall swallowed his disappointment and continued to serve the president. In his excellent "tandem" biography, Parrish conveys the enormous accomplishments of two very different men and their invaluable service as a team throughout most of WW II.
