"During the four centuries of the Roman occupation of Britain the structure and needs of the army changed constantly. Since there was no standard fort design this book begins by describing an imaginary fort, and then traces the development of fort-building techniques and methods of construction. The many different designs that were employed for each type of building within the forts are illustrated with plans, diagrams and photographs." .
