FIRST EDITION 1819. Published by John Lowndes. Nice tight compact book. Some intermittent foxing on several pages, a few have quite a lot of foxing. Signature of William Henry Chippendale and dated 1856 on the first page. Thin volume of work. Wear to leather of spine and corners but quite a nice rare book. Rare book - at the time of listing there was no other copy available for sale in the world.

Description:
Chicago: Argus Press, 1927. Unusual item. "This edition consists of 490 numbered copies and 17 copies lettered A to Q and signed by the author. This is number _________" This field would normally be filled in by hand and the book would then be signed by the author. This field is blank and the book is not signed, making it a very rare item. Brown hardcover boards have dark brown leather spine which extends about an inch and a half onto covers. Bright gilt titles and decoration on front on leather. 71 pages on handmade or heavy ivory laid paper. Sewn binding. From page 49 "The love element is the dominant feature in Herrick's poetry, and it suggests a most interesting question: Did the women of whom he sang really exist, or were they creatures of fancy? This has always been a problem, not only for the student of Herrick and his day, but for all lovers of poetry: for it animates the dispute as to whether a man can create, upon a foundation of unreality, a thing of real… Read More

Description:
Navy cloth binding. Gilt title and Design. Stunning colour illustrations by Arthur Rackham.
Le Morte d'Arthur (originally spelled Le Morte Darthur, ungrammatical Middle French for "The Death of Arthur") is a 15th-century Middle English prose reworking by Sir Thomas Malory of tales about the legendary King Arthur, Guinevere, Lancelot, Merlin and the Knights of the Round Table—along with their respective folklore. In order to tell a "complete" story of Arthur from his conception to his death, Malory compiled, rearranged, interpreted and modified material from various French and English sources. Today, this is one of the best-known works of Arthurian literature. Many authors since the 19th-century revival of the legend have used Malory as their principal source. Written in prison, Le Morte d'Arthur was first published in 1485 at the end of the medieval English era by William Caxton, who changed its title from the original The Whole Book of King Arthur and of His Noble Knights of the Round Table (The… Read More

Description:
1847, first printing, 54 page pamphlet in fair to good condition. Wraps are nearly off, front is stained, title page heavily foxed with pencil notations of prior book seller. Interior is otherwise pretty good, minor to moderate foxing, no other writing or vandalism. Complete as issued. Scarce first printing of this satire on tobacco use. People have suggested for a long time that tobacco has ill effects on the health of users and those around them - here is a 19th century example of that opinion. Identification of the author is difficult - I have listed two common suggestions. I am pretty sure we can rule out Solomon Spittle. Item is rare: WordCat locates two copies of this printing (#237747794); none from this date are for sale. Please see scans of the item you will receive. Included in 'Medical' history as this pamphlet does more than hint at the health problems of tobacco users.

Condition is Very Good: Recased using original boards sometime in last 40 years. Modern endpapers. No interior writing, occasional foxing, some smudges, old corner folds. Small hole pp.13/14 affecting a few letters. Binding is sound. 160 pages with 4 plates and 4 engravings embedded in text all included in pagination. Contents bound at end as usual with this book. The plates and engravings are same topics and locations as the 1842 edition but are by a different engraver. True first edition is 1835 in either New York or Pennsylvania. See Howes S843; Ayer 272; Field 1470; Graff 3930 and OCLC: 35730821. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: putting an accurate date on this edition is problematic. Nelson began publishing in 1854 so definitely after that. WorldCat suggests "187?" which is reasonable looking at materials used.… Read More

Fourteen volumes in original hardcovers. Series 1: volumes 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12, 15, 20, 21, 22, 23, 25, 26. 1896-1914. Generally condition runs from Good to Very Good plus. These are heavy volumes that are prone to binding failures when handled improperly. Some of these volumes are sound, some strengthened with new endpapers, some where binding is starting. None have failed bindings. The earlier volumes show more general wear to the boards than later volumes. I have prepared a more complete condition report on each volume so feel free to inquire. Shipping will be actual cost to me not more (weight of this is about 44 pounds). Please see images of the books you will receive. Notes: a quite interesting set with maps, charts and images of warships in every volume. An incredible feat of research that took 33 years to complete. (Civil War)
