About This Item

New York / London: Whittlesey House McGraw Hill, 1945. First Edition. Hardcover with dust jacket. Very Good/Good. Graham Bernbach. 8vo. Pp. viii, 267. Illustrated with Bernbach line drawings and b&w photo reproductions. Blue cloth, titles stamped in white, illustrated endpapers: minimal spine lean, edges lightly rubbed, minimal toning to leaf edges. In the color illustrated dust jacket, unclipped: spine ends and corners chipped, edges rubbed and toned, spine darkened. A poignant piece of propaganda published toward the end of WWII, when focus on the Pacific Theater began to prevail over waning European action.

To be sure, the travails of George Tweed contribute to a remarkable story of survival: He was a World War II Navy radioman who eluded Japanese forces on the Pacific island of Guam for more than two years. When Japanese forces overran Guam in 1941, Tweed and several others slipped into the jungle rather than surrender. After the others were captured and killed, Tweed managed to elude Japanese soldiers for 30 months, providing information to American forces when the island was recaptured in 1944.

Awarded the Legion of Merit , in 1989 Tweed died in a car accident in Northern California. Dust jacket is now preserved in a removable clear archival sleeve.
