London, England: J. Hatchard. Near Fine. 1811. Three-Quarter Leather. Near Fine three quarter leather edition, rebound with new endpapers. Text has some foxing. No names or marks. Smith was Secretary of the Navy under Thomas Jefferson's two administrations and then Secretary of State under James Madison, a stepping stone to the Presidency. Smith published his "Address to the People" accusing Madison of excessive hostility to England, at which point Madison fired him. Nice piece of American history. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 90 pages .
