About This Item

Glasgow & Edinburgh: William Hodge & Company, 1950. Book. Good. Hardcover. 2nd revised edition.. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Originally published in German in 1919, then translated by Jane Lymburn and published by Hodge in 1936. Hecht contends that the space between Burns and himself permits him a less biased view, if an also less acute one. Contains the author's preface to the first English edition. Foreword by Sir Patrick J. Dollan. Laid in is a piece of ephemera of moderate interest, that being an advance order form for the 1936 Hodge edition, consisting of an 8.5" x 11" single sheet folded once vertically, and displaying as page 1 the 1936 title page (with "Ready January, 1936" and "Price 12/6 net." across top edge). Page 2 is an excerpt from the author's preface to the English edition. Page 3 is the contents page. Page 4 is the order form. Red cloth w/gilt spine lettering, 301 pages. Includes appendix (Heron's 'A Memoir of the Life of the Late Robert Burns', originally published in Edinburgh in 1797), bibliography, indices. Spine cocked, wear to corners/spine ends, tanned/dusty edges, off-setting to end papers, previous owner's sticker across top edge of front free end paper. Order form is unused, w/edgewear, light soil..
