London; Rupert Hart-Davis, 1954., 1954. Hard Cover. FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp. 254, [2]. Publishers' orange cloth with silver titles to spine in unclipped pictorial dust-jacket designed by Ralph Thompson. Covers rubbed at spine tips and corners, with very slight surface soiling. Ownership inscription to ffep and a little foxing to fore-edge otherwise contents clean and bright. Jacket nicked & creased, and lightly soiled with minor loss to spine and corners. A Very Good copy in Good jacket. Early novel by O'Brian (1914-2000), an engaging adventure saga aimed at older children which begins with a voyage on the South China Sea in the 1930s. The maritime setting foreshadows O'Brian's bestselling Aubrey-Maturin series, begun some fifteen years later, and is told in his own distinctive style.
