Description:
New York, Alfred A Knopf, 1933, hardcover, 256 pp, First Edition stated, First Printing, Association copy Signed and Inscribed by the Author on the front endpaper "To Kay Francis - all admiration - Max Ewing" and dated "New York, December 1932" Very Good condition, lacking dustjacket. Straight, tight and clean with no markings, slightly rolled and faded spine, nicks to top edge of front board and head of spine, two small holes and edge nicks to front endpaper, small split to paper at front hinge. The many accomplishments of this multi-talented pianist, composer, novelist, poet, sculptor, and photographer were overshadowed by his homosexuality and his unlikely friendship with the prize fighter Jack Pollock. Max's suicide in 1934, at the age of 31, adds drama and sadness to this remarkable man's mostly happy but short life during which Max mingled with dozens of artists, authors, composers, musicians, politicians, stage and movie stars, and wealthy families in Europe, New York, and Hollywood. Description:
Chatto & Windus, London, 1934. Book. Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. The first English-language edition. 8vo. 295pp. Brown cloth lettered in gold at the spine and with a small gilt decoration. Cloth a little spotted and with just a trace of wear to several extremities. A touch of spotting to the endpapers and browning to a blank preliminary and concluding leaf, and the publisher's top edge stain just a little patchy. Really quite a nice, crisp copy, lacking the uncommon dust wrapper. The basis for John Huston's magnificent Bogart movie, this Creighton translation precedes Traven's own translation which he produced for the American issue (Knopf, 1935 - the author is on record stating his preference for this version)..

Victor Gollancz, London, 1939. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. First UK Edition (first printing). 8vo. 286pp. Blue cloth lettered in blue at the spine. Backstrip faded and tips of two corners gently knocked. Former owner bookplate to the front pastedown, alongside a small dealer plate, and five digits inkstamped to the corner of the front free endpaper (presumably a private library reference code). An extremely crisp copy. No dust wrapper. The author's second book, a collection of four novellas which received an extremely favourable reception and permitted him sufficient financial freedom to begin his seminal work, 'Native Son'. This UK edition is significantly more uncommon than the US edition which appeared a year earlier..

New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process.
