About This Item

London: Macmillan, 1896. Hard Cover. (London: Macmillan and Co., Ltd. 1896). First Edition Thus. Illustrations by Edmund J Sullivan. Introduction by Augustine Birrell. Frontispiece (with the original tissue guard present) and 49 fine full-page illustrations in the text. Publisher's original dark green cloth, upper board and and backstrip elaborately blocked and lettered in gilt in an art-nouveau style design, gilt edges, dark green end-papers, a near fine (or better) copy with a tiny bookseller's ticket to the rear paste-down. With 6pp publisher's catalogue bound in at the end. E. J. Sullivan, was a British book illustrator who worked in a style which merged the British tradition of illustration from the 1860's with aspects of Art Nouveau. A superb copy and exceedingly uncommon in this lovely condition. Certainly the best example that we have encountered. The School for Scandal, first performed at Drury Lane, on May 8, 1777, is considered one of the greatest comedies of manners in the English language. Photographs/scans available upon request.
