'When the book-work of an unknown historian-was ready, it was difficult to obtain a publisher for it. But it was no sooner published than it found an audience that quickly grew enthusiastic over it, and it had a like welcome from the critics. One of its earliest reviewers was Froude in "The Westminster Review" (1856), where he hailed it a "history as complete as industry and genius can make it.
